I offer dog walks, puppy socialisation, and home visits.
After years in a legal policy career, I have realised that caring for dogs is where my true passion lies. I have trained with RSPCA as a dog walker and puppy socialiser and am currently studying with the National Dog Trainers Federation for a Certificate III in Dog Behaviour and Training.
I grew up surrounded by pets - border collie dogs, cats, rabbits, and fish. I am currently a stay-at-home parent to two beautiful kids and one very lovable standard labradoodle.
DOG WALKS – As social creatures, most dogs do not do well when separated from their humans. No-one likes coming home to chewed-up furniture, a dug-up garden, complaints from the neighbours about excessive barking or ‘accidents’ on the living room rug – all symptoms of a bored, anxious, or stressed out dog. This is where I can help with regular walks – an exercised dog is a happy dog.
To me, a dog walk should be about exercising a dog’s body AND its brain! You can choose to add dog training to a walk and your dog and I will work on engagement and focus, loose lead walking, and polish up some doggie manners – like taking a treat nicely. I’ll try to incorporate some basic agility like walking along walls, jumping over short fences and up on to park benches etc to help build your dog’s confidence.
I am happy to tailor our walk to meet your dog’s needs so just let me know how long you would like, where you would like us to walk etc. by submitting a no obligation enquiry (using the booking button) and we can arrange an option to suit you and your dog. Examples of the kinds of walks I offer are:
a) 30 minute walk around your neighbourhood – from $23 b) 45 minute walk around your neighbourhood - from $32 c) 60 minute walk around your neighbourhood – from $42 c) any of the above walks with transportation to a lovely walk location, eg Weston Park near Lake Burley Griffin, Curtin Ridge and Playing Fields (add $10), and d) any of the above walks with dog training session (add $18).
I usually only walk one dog at a time to ensure they receive my full attention, but I’m happy to take two dogs from the same family if they are happy to be together (add $10 for extra dog).
Mad Paws will also charge a small booking fee which, among other things, covers the costs of the insurance which will apply during my visits with your pet. HOME VISITS – PUPPY SOCIALISATION
Every puppy parent has heard how important socialisation is in the first few months of your dog’s life. Proper socialisation is not just to other people and animals, but also to touch, the lead, different walking surfaces, sounds, lights etc. But how do you give your puppy the socialisation they need when you need to work and they are too young for dog walking?
That’s where I come in – I can visit your home to spend time with your puppy and socialise him or her using my box of tricks - toys that smell like my adult (and fully vaccinated!) dog, recordings of different potentially scary sounds like thunder, hats, sunglasses, big coats, a fluoro tradie's vest etc. I’ll work with your puppy to desensitise them to touch – setting them up for a happy relationship with their vet or children who may ‘accidently’ pull on their ears. Outside of school hours, I may bring my children – 7 and 9 – who can also help your puppy get used to little humans.
This service is a perfect complement to, but does not replace, the extremely valuable puppy to puppy socialisation opportunities offered by a good puppy preschool.
I am happy to tailor my visit with your puppy to his or her needs so just let me know how long you would like, what sort of things you would like us to work on etc. by submitting a no obligation enquiry (using the booking button) and we can arrange an option to suit you and your dog.
HOME VISITS – ALTERNATIVE TO BOARDING
Some pets hate boarding! Strange animals, strange people, strange smells and strange food to upset their tummies. The comfortable surrounds of home might just be the thing!
While you are away I’ll visit your pet (dog, cat, bird, rabbit or guinea pig) to feed them, change their water, and let them out to toilet / change kitty litter. I can play, cuddle, and socialise and, if your pet is a dog, you can choose dog training as an add-on service and I can do a little bit of basic training to keep their brains busy so they can’t miss you too much while you are away. Dog owners can also choose to add a walk to my visit for extra exercise and stimulation.
I recommend two visits a day – one in the morning and one in the evening – but it is up to you and what you feel would be best for your pet.
