Shelby is my name, but you may also know me as ‘The Dog Training Chick.’ I began working in animal care and education at only age fifteen when I was employed as a Pet Care Advisor with RSPCA Victoria. I very quickly grew interested in the way animals communicate through behaviour and ways that we can modify these behaviours through positive reinforcement based training. Over the years I have become immensely passionate about breaking down barriers between owners and their pets and have witnessed some beautiful connections develop.
Not long after starting work in animal rescue, I adopted my handsome Australian Kelpie, Henry, who is quiet an anxious dog. I’ve spent the last five years holding on tight to the rollarcoaster he’s taken me on, trying to understand his actions and why he practises the behaviour that he does. Henry has taught me so much and come a very long way, he has made me the dog handler that I am.
In 2017, I decided to complete my Certificate III in Dog Behaviour and Training with the National Dog Trainers Federation to greater my understanding around canine psychology. My knowledge around responsible pet care and ownership has also furthered as for the last eighteen months I have been working at a shelter facility in Melbourne’s North. I have volunteered for the behaviour team at Blue Cross Animal’s Society and have also worked closely under a leading Animal Behaviourist.
In my spare time I may be found sipping red wine while reading old poetry, eating food with good company somewhere close by an ocean, or packing up a tent and taking the dog on a road trip. I also offer pet sitting and dog walking services through ‘Wizards of 4 Paws’, one of Melbourne’s most trusted pet care business.
The best part about being The Dog Training Chick is that I get to be exactly that, just a chick that knows a bit about training animals. I get to conduct my business in a way that welcomes people, and their dogs, to just simply be themselves and enter a beautiful journey of shared knowledge and success through humbled connections....
