As a child our house was never without a dog (and numerous other pets), and I believe that there’s no more loyal companion than a dog. Our 13yo Japanese Spitz, Henschke, is an integral part of our family and a wonderful and gentle “brother” to our two young children, who adore him. Growing up with pets teaches us so much about caring for others and the meaning of friendship and loyalty, and I am keen to instil those values in our children.

Henschke is a gentle and friendly boy, and although he’s getting on a bit, he loves to have other dogs for company. We’ve looked after dogs of numerous shapes and sizes in the past, for long and short stays, and he always welcomes them onto his turf with open paws! I work part-time, mainly from home, so am generally around the house, although we do have days out sometimes. Henschke stays inside when we’re out and sleeps downstairs, as do any fur guests (unless they’re happier outside!). We have a fully-fenced back garden and side deck, so there’s plenty of space for playing.

We live in a townhouse so can’t take noisy dogs, in case we get complaints from strata, and we don’t let dogs up on the furniture. Dogs must also be completely housetrained and not inclined to chew toys that inevitably get left lying around. Most importantly though, they must be used to and completely safe around young children.

We’re fully vaccinated, including our eldest, and a non-smoking household. ...
