My grandparents had a farm so growing up, in addition to the usual four cats and two dogs, we also often 'kidnapped' baby lambs and kid goats. Except for a few years while travelling and renting, I've always had pets and am experienced looking after dogs, cats, birds and the odd sheep or goat which may be hanging around.
We currently have a possibly insane cat Biscuit (he is still young though so it might just be that..) and a dog Cashew, a Kelpie X (it's a toss up between crossed with dingo or kangaroo) who we rescued from a shelter back in 2017. We've trained Cashew in basic commands and both the cat and dog are a huge part of the family- the kids fight over which of them the pets love more, but my money is on me or the other half because we're the ones giving them food.
My eldest was born in 2016 and my youngest in 2018 and they love that I help people with their pets, so with your permission I often bring one or both of my children with me to 'help' by patting or cuddling your pet while I do the boring stuff of litter trays etc....
