I've always loved and lived with animals. My stepfather was a veterinarian and from an early age, I helped him at his clinic, where I had the opportunity to interact with several species and learn to understand limits in dealing with animals.
A few years ago I started working at an NGO that rescues and finds new homes for abandoned or mistreated cats. I was the manager at the Brazilian NGO Catland, overseeing the care of over 200 cats. My responsibilities included organising supplies inventory, feeding, maintenance of proper sanitation conditions, well-being (i.e. social interactions and territory organisation), and health care (i.e. medication, neutralisation, forced feeding, and neonatal care). This experience further tightened my bonds with animals and willingness to help them. In 2017 I came to study in Australia, where I had the opportunity to work as a pet sitter for one year. Was a very rewarding experience and now that I'm living in Australia again, I would like to continue this work that is so important to me. I also earned more experience working voluntarily in other animal shelters in Portugal, where I have lived for the last nine months.
Here in Australia I cannot have animals for now, so one way to have them in my life is to care for and help other people's animals.
As pet sitter, I usually spend one to two hours with the pets during visits and walking (time may vary according to the needs of each client). I like to take the dogs (when they're sociable) to dog parks, where they can interact with other dogs and play without the need for a leash. When I'm hosting, the usually stay indoors (except for opposition from owners).
With cats, I prefer to make room for them to approach; my experience n shelters has taught me that it's the best way to earn their trust.
I love spendind time with animals, and I do whatever it takes to make sure they have a good time with me. I have no problem playing with toys, getting dirt or running around with them. Honestly, that accomplishes me....
