I've just moved to Sydney and my rental does not allow pets, which I understand but it does put me in a predicament. I miss the companionship of four-legged furry friends - cats and dogs. The answer? Pet sitting! It allows me to spend time with other people's pets and I get to know Sydney in the process.
I drive a lot for work and distances don't bother me. I wish I could say the same about Sydney traffic but you can't have it all, right? I've travelled a lot and fell into the category of an 'overly anxious pet parent.' It's not that I didn't trust the pet sitter, it's that my pets were more than just pets - I missed them terribly. My experience means I understand the need for more regular updates for some, and less for others!
I have a soft-spot for rescue pets, especially those who've been neglected or mistreated in any way. A gold coin donation will be made to a pet rescue of choice, with the rescue changing every three months. I'm still getting to know the rescues in Sydney but once I get a feel for them I can decide who will be the first charity of choice. I know that a gold coin is not much but I'm from the school of Every Little Bit Counts, especially animal rescues who are doing everything possible to save the lives of the voiceless.
I'm about to embark on a Certificate II in Animal Care so that I can gain a proper understanding of the needs of animals, rather than relying on my real-world experience alone. This involves 140 hours of placement time so, in addition to pet sitting I get regular contact with animals at a shelter. Looks like my desire to connect with four-legged fur-friends has been fulfilled, despite not having a pet-friendly rental!
** Super excited to announce my first charity of choice --- Fetching Dogs Rescue Group. It's been personally recommended to me by a friend and I look forward to being able to contribute to the amazing work they do. Plus they look beyond breeds, which is vital because you can never judge a book by it's cover; I believe all animals can be rehabilitated, despite having cruel owners prior to being rehomed. ...
