My first unofficial pet was next door’s cat when I was 13. She adopted me and would hang off my bedroom window flyscreen from 6am to be with me and followed my around like a dog. My first dog was a kelpie, blue cattle and Doberman cross who had the call of the wild and needed a lot of exercise. We had him till his passing. Next was our Cairn terrier who had her own lounge chair and whom we always took on holidays with us. We had her for 16 years till her passing. As I then lived in apartments I have had cats. I have never bought a pet I have always taken in strays, no matter if they are injured like Teddy one eye who could no longer stay with his owner and needed someone to love and care for him in his old age. Next was Darling who came from Sydney Cats and Dog shelter at 6 months old with cat flu. She was with me till her passing. I still grieve her. Next I fostered Mia a feral cat with only 4 teeth, was born in a feral colony and had had. 3 litters of kittens by the time she was 18 months old. She had been trapped twice. She spent her First. 3 months hissing in the corner of my kitchen bench and I fed her soft food teaspoon by teaspoon. I gained her trust and decided she needed to be my pet. Now 5 years later she nudges me for pats and purrs with contentment. I believe animals need advocates as they do not have a voice and it takes commitment and responsibility to care for animals....
